The Boston Red Sox have a very crucial offseason ahead of them. They fell short of the division title, American League pennant, and the World Series after a third-place finish in the AL East. This offseason, they need to add a lot more talent in order to close the gap on the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.

The biggest storyline of their offseason is the Alex Bregman free agency sweepstakes. Bregman opted out of his contract this winter and is on the open market for the second time in two years.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently projected Bregman would sign a massive seven-year, $172 million deal this winter.

“He helped himself with a nice year in Boston, which almost has to bring him back,” Heyman wrote. “He’s that good a fit. The Tigers, Jays, Mariners and possibly Phillies and Cubs also could make sense.”

The Red Sox should be considered the favorites in these sweepstakes unless they go after a big name like Pete Alonso before Bregman signs.

But the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners are two teams to watch, too. The Mariners need to replace or retain both of their star corner infielders, so a deal with Bregman could make a lot of sense. The Tigers have been closely connected to the star third baseman since last year.

Either way, Heyman’s projection seems about right. Bregman is likely going to sign for at least $150 million this winter.
