Your friends don’t want to exclude anyone. But they might be open to telling you if another person has RSVP’d. Perhaps you can deputize one friend who can tell you whether your ex is on the list. Then you can make decisions about what events are worth your time.
It would be lovely to make some new friends. Even just one or two. You could join a club or tell an acquaintance you’d like to have dinner. If your world gets a little bigger, this circle – and its dynamics – might mean a little less.
Over time, if there are more (and different) people in your life, you mind not care if you run into your ex at a group event.
My last thought: make sure you’re initiating. If you’re only ever being invited to cool events but you don’t plan, you don’t get to make the rules of the party.
