The state tournament dreams live on for Summerfield baseball and softball and New Boston Huron girls soccer.
All three captured District championships Friday.
Summerfield’s baseball team emerged victorious in the Division 4 tournament it hosted.
The Bulldog softball team brought home at Division 4 title from Britton Deerfield.
And Huron’s soccer team, a Division 2 state runner-up last spring, earned the right to continue its quest at Tecumseh.
Milan’s soccer team fell to Ann Arbor Greenhills in a Division 2 District final.
SOFTBALL
Summerfield threepeats
BRITTON – Summerfield won its third consecutive District by beating Vandercook Lake 16-1 in the semifinals and Manchester 6-4 in the finals.
Summerfield coach Christine Zappone raved about the Class of 2026.
“The seniors really rounded up the girls and told them this could be our last game,” Zappone said. “The seniors are truly leaders. They fired everyone up and they followed.”
Senior Brea Olmstead was strong in the circle in both games, tossing a two-hitter in the opener and striking out 13 in the finals.
She recently eclipsed 500 career strikeouts.
Sophomore Gabby Ault was the offensive leader in the first game, going 3-for-4. She drove in three runs along with Hayley Kohls and Hayden Iott.
Kohls and Iott each had a pair of hits in the finals and Mia Samples drove in two runs.
Summerfield continues its state-tournament run in a Regional at Dansville on June 6.
BASEBALL
Summerfield pitchers excel
PETERSBURG – Summerfield’s pitchers were stingy as the Bulldogs repeated as District champs by beating Lenawee Christian 6-2 in the semifinals and Britton Deerfield 13-3 in the champoinship game.
“It was a great team effort,” Summerfield coach Reid Olmstead said. “We got contributions from several different guys. Our pitching was really good.”
Reece Kalb was outstanding on the mound in the opener, carrying a 2-hitter into the seventh inning before Rylee Schiffler came on for the final two outs.
Jude Flowers was the winning pitcher in the finals.
Allen Roof’s two-run double in the first inning set the tone in the championship game. Clark Ciacelli and Schiffler followed with run-scoring singles to make it a six-run frame.
Summerfield, the Tri-County Conference co-champs with Whiteford, beat two teams from its league.
“I told the guys that none of what we did in the regular season mattered,” Olmstead said. “They came to play today.”
Summerfield (16-7) stays on its home field for its Regional opener Wednesday.
GIRLS SOCCER
Huron midfielder makes big play
TECUMSEH – Maggie Mentzer crashed to the ground following a collision with an Adrian player.
Her injured right knee, which had caused her to miss the last two weeks was aching. The calf on the same leg was cramping badly.
It would have been easy to linger on the grass for a few extra moments.
But that’s not how she plays.
The New Boston Huron senior scrambled to her feet, found the ball and launched a perfect shot from near the top of the goal box to score the final goal of a 4-2 victory in the finals of the Division 2 District at Tecumseh.
“I really had push through,” she said.
Huron coach Matt Lividini was not surprised.
“That’s her style of play,” he said.

Mentzer’s goal came at a critical time with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. Adrian had just scored to trim Huron’s lead to a single goal.
Miley Skamiera netted the first three goals for Huron, running her school-record total to 43. Assists went to Avery Turk and Evanne Murray.
It was the ninth goal of the season for Mentzer.
“Her leg was cramping, but that’s her shot right from that spot,” Lividini said. “She hits it at 60 miles per hour. That’s why she is going to play at the University of Indianapolis next year.”
Huron’s next action will come in the Division 2 Regional at Ypsilanti Lincoln Tuesday. The Chiefs are 16-3.
Milan falls in finals
ANN ARBOR – Milan used a defensive strategy to slow down Ann Arbor Greenhills, but could not generate any offense of its own in falling 2-0 in the finals of the Division 3 District at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.
The game was scoreless for the first 75 minutes.
“We played more of a defensive kind of game and sat back,” Milan coach Phil Hayes said. “Greenhills is always a good team. They have a good coach. We had a strategy. We knew what we were doing. We just made a couple of errors.”
Charlotte Finch, Emma Walline, Ellie Budd, Molly Walline, Abbi Neuhart and Alivia Held played well for the Big Reds, who finish with a 9-6-1 record.
Aubree Higgins, who was expected to be a standout in the midfield, suffered a season-ending injury in the fourth game of the season.
“I was extremely satisfied,” Hayes said of Milan’s season. “You could truly see how much we grew and played as a team.”
BOYS GOLF
Two Bulldogs qualify
COLDWATER – James Feudi and Logan Schwichtenberg of Summerfield both qualified for the state finals by tying for fifth place in the Division 4 Regional at Coldwater Golf Club Thursday.
Each shot 81.
Summerfield shot 359 to place sixth in the team standings.
