WYANDOTTE, Okla. — A small town school district in northeast Oklahoma is getting big-time help from one of the area’s tribal nations.

All of Wyandotte’s Middle and High school sporting events will now be free to attend this year — for all members of the public.

A generous donation from the Wyandotte Tribe means friends and family of student athletes can support their kids — by showing up to all of their games without worrying about the cost.

Chief Billy Friend says Wyandotte has always been a small but connected community. He hopes that allowing free entry to games, will strengthen the town’s bond, as school events are a big deal for the town.

Both school and government officials who made this possible, hope that in the future — these free sporting events can help families connect even more.

“If we have one family that comes up and says, Hey, this enabled us to bring our whole family to the game and this enabled us to have, you know, more supporters for our kids, if we just make an impact on one family, then it’s been a success for us,” said Chief Friend.

“We all have heroes. Those younger kids see their brothers, sisters or those older kids in there that they want to be like that they want to participate. And so I just see that our, the positive would be for our community,” said Brad Wade, Wyandotte Schools Superintendent.

Chief Friend says that the decision to donate was inspired by the Wyandotte Tribe’s ancestors — who thought that true wealth was measured by what you give, not what you have.
