College football Power Four title picks and top Group of Five contender

Before the Snap looks at who’s poised to win the Power Four leagues and which Group of Five program could emerge as the top contender.

If there’s one way to sum up the ACC football regular season, just look at who is playing in the conference championship game between No. 16 Virginia and Duke.

The Cavaliers were projected to finish 14th in the ACC preseason poll, and now are a top-20 team. The Blue Devils were projected sixth in the conference but are now in the championship game as a five-loss team thanks to some lucky breaks in Week 14 of the college football season.

Now, the two programs will play for a potential College Football Playoff berth at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Saturday’s meeting between Virginia and Duke is their second game in the last four weeks. The Cavaliers defeated the Blue Devils 34-17 on Nov. 15 behind a two-touchdown day from quarterback Chandler Morris, who also threw for 316 yards in the win.

Regardless of the outcome on Dec. 6, the ACC will crown a first-time champion: The Cavaliers and Blue Devils both are 0-1 in their only previous trips to Charlotte. Virginia lost the conference title game vs. Clemson in 2019, while Duke lost to Florida State in 2013.

The game is not without CFP implications, either: If unranked Duke wins, the ACC may be left out of the playoff entirely for two non-power conference teams. The American Conference champion between No. 20 North Texas (No. 24 in CFP) and No. 21 Tulane (20 in CFP) is presumed in. However, a Blue Devils win might be enough to sneak in a potential Sun Belt champion James Madison, ranked 25th in the latest CFP top 25.

Duke vs Virginia picks, predictions, odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of Thursday, Dec. 4

    • Spread: Virginia -3.5
    • Over/under: 57.5
    • Moneyline: Virginia (-175) | Duke (+155)

Prediction: John Leuzzi, USA TODAY Network: Virginia 28, Duke 21

The first meeting between both teams, which took place just a few weeks ago, was not all that close. Virginia beat Duke convincingly 34-17 behind a big game from Morris. This time around, it won’t be a blowout win for the Cavaliers, but Morris will still lead Tony Elliott’s program to their first conference championship game win with another big game against the ACC’s 14th-ranked passing defense.

A five-loss Duke team winning the ACC championship game would be a great — and fitting — storyline for the season the conference has had, though the ACC desperately needs Virginia to win so it can have a representative in the 12-team CFP field.
