Medals aside, the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are not only about dominating the continent.

They also hold significant meaning for many athletes, as a major milestone on their way to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

There are seven sports that offer qualification to the 2028 Summer Olympics right after the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, namely Archery, Hockey, Sailing, Squash, Surfing, Tennis and Triathlon.

Nevertheless, the qualification system is sport-specific and varies greatly from one discipline to another, sometimes securing a quota through victory, sometimes merely influencing the qualification process.

Tennis also offers another clear path to qualification.

Both the male and female singles winner in the 2026 Asian Games can get an ITF slot for LA28. What about cricket and other Olympic sports?

Not all Olympic sports contested in Aichi-Nagoya have LA28 quotas.

It is still possible that other Olympic sports will benefit from the Asian Games in the sense of their qualification rankings or qualifying points. LA28 will include 31 sports in their Olympic programme, and an extra five sports on top of the Olympic programme, says LA28.

Take cricket, for instance; it will be part of the LA28 Olympics now that it is back on the Olympic programme, but the Asian Games cannot be considered an Olympic quota event like hockey and tennis. Cricket’s inclusion on the Aichi-Nagoya programme by the OCA was partially due to the fact that it was part of the LA28 Olympics programme.
