    From staff reports

CHINA GROVE  – Some struggles in the non-conference games have hurt the overall record, but Carson’s baseball team still has hopes of climbing back into the South Piedmont Conference race.

The Cougars have been hampered by injuries, but they do have quite a bit of talent, and they rallied to beat Northwest Cabarrus 8-7 on Friday in a South Piedmont Conference game. Carson (4-8, 4-2) finished a sweep of the Trojans (2-9, 0-6).

Carson lost twice to West Rowan, but still has two SPC games with South Rowan and two with East Rowan and can still be a factor.

Northwest Cabarrus led 7-2 going to the bottom of the sixth, but Carson got two runs back in the sixth and scored four in the seventh for a walk-off win.

Carson Kirk had the game-winning hit. He also got his first mound win of the season.

Kirk, Will Beck, Ryan Snyder and Jase Overcash had two hits each for Carson. Overcash, Snyder and Beck had doubles. Dylan Alexander and Landon Fleming drove in two runs. Alexander and Snyder scored two.

Carson’s SPC games next week are against Concord.

SPENCER  – South Stanly scored 11 runs in the fourth inning to end Friday’s Yadkin Valley Conference game at North Rowan early.

The Bulls (7-6, 4-0) won 17-0 and finished a sweep of the Cavaliers. Hayden Jernigan had a triple. Eli Hopkins pitched a one-hitter in the shortened game.

Zion Gillespie had the hit for the Cavaliers (2-7, 1-3). North sent Caleb Everett, Chase Cauble and Donnie Rogers to the mound. They combined to strike out two and walked nine, and they were hurt by seven errors.

    SOFTBALL

CHINA GROVE – Northwest Cabarrus pounded 21 hits and beat Carson 16-3 in six innings in Friday’s South Piedmont Conference game.

Haylee Ellis had four hits for the Trojans (4-5, 2-4). Tatum Krolak had two doubles. Langston Harrison had a triple.

Northwest led 10-0 before the Cougars (4-6, 2-4) scored three in the bottom of the third.

Caylee Snow had three of Carson’s five hits. Leah Troutman was 1-for-2.

    GIRLS SOCCER

LANDIS – South Rowan got down 2-0 against West Rowan but came back for a 4-2 South Piedmont Conference victory on Friday.

The Falcons led 2-1 at the half.

“Coach (Chris) Mead had his team well-prepared and ready to play us and they jumped on us pretty good,” South coach Brian Bell said. “Give West a lot of credit. We were able to fight back, but they made it tough for us. West is a dangerous team.”

Addison Broeckling and Ava Broeckling scored for West (3-3, 1-3). Ava assisted on her sister’s goal. Olyvia Brown also had an assist.

South (6-1-1, 3-1) got goals from four different players – Anabelle Chavis, Avery Rawlings, Adeline Rodgers and Allison Landaverde.

Cailynn Withers had two assists. Rawlings had one.

    Margo Maples made seven saves.

“South is really solid,” Mead said. “It was a great match.”
