Prices at the pump keep going up in Massachusetts.

Last week marked the first time gas prices moved above $3 since December, according to AAA Northeast. And they’re only continuing to rise.

Last week, prices climbed 30%, the largest weekly gain since 1983, according to AAA, as cargo is still at a standstill through the critical Strait of Hormuz. Crude oil prices are now over $100 a barrel.

“Even with strong domestic production of oil and refined products, gas prices are heavily influenced by the price of crude oil. Additionally, global supply issues caused by the conflict in the Middle East could cause additional export pressure on the United States as more countries look to different sources to meet their energy need,” Mark Schieldrop, senior spokesperson for AAA Northeast, said in a press release.

    Here’s what to know.

What are gas prices currently looking like in the region?

    • National average: It’s $3.47 per gallon of regular gas, currently. It was $3.19 on March 3, 2026.

    • Massachusetts: $3.31 (regular gas per gallon). That’s up 26 cents from March 3, 2026.

    • Rhode Island: $3.32 (regular gas per gallon). That’s up 28 cents from March 3, 2026.

What are the current prices for different types of gas in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts prices for a gallon of regular unleaded gas remain lower than the national average.

The prices are the following, according to AAA Northeast:

    • Regular gas average (per gallon): $3.313 (was $2.916 a week ago)

    • Mid-grade gas average (per gallon): $3.880 (was $3.535 a week ago)

    • Premium gas average (per gallon): $4.250 (was $3.914 a week ago)

    • Diesel gas average (per gallon): $4.690 (was $3.959 a week ago)

What was the highest cost ever for a gallon of regular gas in Massachusetts?

According to AAA Northeast, the record price was $5.049. That was the cost for a gallon of gas on June 12, 2022.

What was the highest cost ever for a gallon of diesel gas in Massachusetts?

It was $6.410, according to AAA Northeast, adding that diesel gas hit that mark on May 18, 2022.

Prices at the pump keep going up in Massachusetts and beyond, and most likely will continue to do so.

How can drivers save money on gas?

Here are some tips from AAA Northeast on how to save at the pump:

    • Shop around. Be strategic about fueling up so you can reward the gas station offering the best price with your business. Don’t wait until you’re on empty, which might force you to fill up at a more expensive station, like those at rest stops or right off the highway.

    • Don’t speed. As speed increases above 50mph, aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to drop off significantly.

    • Know which fuel you really need. AAA research has found that unless premium fuel is recommended or required by your car’s manufacturer, it provides no added benefit.
