Red Sox manager Alex Cora reflects on decision to trade Rafael Devers: “We needed to make that move for the benefit of everybody” originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

When the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers back in June, many fans and critics thought their season was over. However, they then bounced back, and actually became a better team, and made it to the playoffs for the first time in years.

Now, Sox manager had some time to reflect on trading Devers, and he still thinks it was the right thing to do. According to him, the whole team benefited from the trade.

“Early in the offseason, we could have talked to Raffy [Devers], and let him know that, ‘Hey, there’s a lot of guys out there, you never know what can happen.’ And that’s the reality of it. You never know what can happen. And as an organization, we should’ve done that, but there’s no regrets to be honest with you. We tried to make it work…We needed to make that move for the benefit of everybody,” Cora said (via Section 10 Podcast).

This whole drama started when the Sox signed Alex Bregman, another third baseman. They told Devers his position was safe, as he made it clear he didn’t want to move from the field. The Sox then moved him to DH and put Bregman at third, which upset him.

This clubhouse drama continued until June 15th, when the Red Sox traded Devers to the San Francisco Giants. And, it seems like the Sox made the right choice, as Devers only hit .236 after being traded.

Now, the Sox can also take what they would have been paying Devers and put it back into their team. Hopefully, they can do it well and make another championship team for their 10th World Series win.
