In a big Massachusetts high school football showdown on Friday night, Xaverian Brothers kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired to take down Catholic Memorial, 25-22.

Junior kicked Zander Govostes nailed a 23-yard chip shot to snap Catholic Memorial’s 17-game winning streak. He improved the Hawks to 4-2 on the year and dropped Catholic Memorial to 5-1. Govostes was swarmed by his teammates at midfield after the make:

The Bay State battle had a big-time visitor in attendance, too. New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye watched the upset before his team heads to Nashville for a game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Maye of course played his high school football at Myers Park in Charlotte. He finished the 2021 cycle as the No. 45 overall prospect, No. 8 QB and No. 3 player in North Carolina, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.

He then signed with North Carolina and enjoyed a successful college career in Chapel Hill. The Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After winning just three games as a rookie last season, Maye and the Pats are off to a 4-2 start this fall. He’s already thrown for over 1,500 yards and 10 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

Xaverian Brothers entered this week as the No. 7 team in Massachusetts, according to the Massey Ratings. Catholic Memorial checked in at No. 2 ahead of Friday night’s thriller.
