New England Patriots
“I wish all of my players could have a great game every game. That’s just not going to happen.”
Current New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is the latest to compliment Drake Maye’s bounce-back performance in recent weeks.
Ahead of the Patriots-Jets clash in Week 6, Glenn spoke very highly of Maye, providing some valuable insight into his thoughts on the third-year quarterback’s progression through the season.
“To me, I go back to last year, and look at everything he’s done. Obviously he was up for MVP,” Glenn said in a press conference this week. “I keep saying this, I wish all of my players could have a great game every game. That’s just not going to happen.
“And he’s had a couple games where he didn’t play as well, but now you see exactly who he is. At some point guys are going to go back to who they are. They will never stay in that rut for that long.”
It’s been widely recognized that Maye had a poor start to the season, but some former players and current NFL analysts have come to the defense of Maye since those struggles.
Julian Edelman went on record saying Maye’s struggles were “probably the best thing that could happen” to him. Meanwhile, Phil Simms tabbed the Patriots as the best team in the NFL
And now Glenn has followed suit. Granted, opposing players and coaches are typically highly complimentary of their opponents week-of. But still, Glenn delivered his thoughts in a genuine way.
Maye has eight touchdowns in his last two games, each key wins over the Bills and Raiders, respectively. He’s found his MVP-caliber form from a season ago once more, and New England’s schedule only gets easier after its tough start.
With the Patriots being 3-2 and heading into a stretch of winnable games, Maye’s return to form could certainly be the catalyst for another strong playoff push.
The Jets are having a bit of a strong season in their own right. They’re 2-3, but have had an extremely challenging start to the season facing three difficult NFC North opponents — the Lions, Packers, and Bears. They lost all three of those contests, but two of them were only by one score. And they have wins over the Titans and Browns.
Patriots-Jets is set for 1 p.m. in Foxborough Sunday.
