New England Patriots running back Jam Miller shared the way he can help the offense this season.
Running back Jam Miller had to wait until the seventh round of the NFL Draft before he heard his name called, being selected by the New England Patriots with the 245th overall pick. Now, he’s hoping to make an immediate strong impression on the team.
The Patriots are a team that already has a two-headed attack at the running back position, highlighted by Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. That’s not going to leave a ton of in-game opportunities, assuming everything goes to plan for the Patriots. Despite that, Miller is still looking to make his impact on the offense in any way he possibly can.
“Whatever position they put me in, if it’s blocking, running, route running or whatever,” Miller said, “At the end of the day, Imma do what I got to do just to let this team win.”
Miller is making the jump to an NFL offense. That’s a challenge generally spoken about for quarterbacks learning a new system, but every rookie has that same challenge, and the offense Josh McDaniels has in place is very demanding of its running backs.
“(I) love it. You know, great offense,” Miller said. “Whatever position he put me in, you know, I’ll take full advantage of it and execute.”

Coming out of high school, Jam Miller was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022. Highly recruited, he eventually landed on Alabama, going to play for Nick Saban. He would later stay with the Crimson Tide, despite Saban’s retirement, to play for Kalen DeBoer.
In the end, 2024 would be Miller’s best in college from a statistical standpoint. He rushed for 668 yards and 7 touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt. Miller also had 16 receptions for 155 yards and a receiving touchdown. That was in 13 games.
2025, Miller’s final college season, saw a slight decrease in his overall rushing numbers but still proved to be a productive season for him. Alabama’s offensive line was heavily criticized throughout that season as well. Even with that, he led the Crimson Tide in rushing with 504 yards.
One strength of Miller’s coming out of Alabama was his health. However, he also knows that it’s nice to have fresh legs, but it won’t necessarily help him make the team, either.
“I don’t feel like it give me an advantage. You know, you got other great running backs, other players,” Miller said. “Everybody’s here to earn a spot, earn a job, and (if) you injured, fresh … if you the best, you’re going to play and start.”
Who is Going to Earn the Third Running Back Slot for the Patriots?

As it stands right now, the first two slots at running back are filled for the Patriots. That’s Stevenson and Henderson. After that, it appears to be an open competition for the third running back slot.
Jam Miller would, seemingly, have the inside slot on that third running back slot. However, he’s not alone in competing for the job. UDFA Myles Montgomery, Lan Larison, and Terrell Jennings are all also still competing. Chad Graff of The Athletic recently shared some insight on that battle.
“This draft class was poor at the running back position, which helps explain why the Patriots waited to take one (they selected Jam Miller in the seventh round). But seventh-round picks are far from guaranteed to make the roster. So while Miller may be the front-runner for the third (and likely final) running back spot, it’s not a given,” Graff wrote.
“Terrell Jennings was solid last season and has familiarity with this coaching staff. Lan Larison was an intriguing undrafted option a year ago before he suffered a season-ending broken foot during the preseason. One of those three will likely earn the last spot on the Patriots roster.”
It’s not going to be easy for any one running back to win the job. However, if Miller can be as versatile in the offense as he plans to be, then he should have a good shot at it.
