A year ago, the average gas price in Massachusetts was 13% lower at $2.93 per gallon.

Gas prices have increased steadily since the U.S. and Israel attacks on Iran started on Saturday, Feb 28. The price increases are primarily due to the limited number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas typically passes through. The Strait of Hormuz is a small section of water between Iran on the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates on the south. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and open ocean.

Oil prices on Monday jumped above $110 a barrel, reaching its highest prices since 2022 as fears grow over prolonged shipping disruptions due to the war in the Middle East. Brent crude, the international benchmark, jumped to $119.50 a barrel overnight Sunday and Monday but has since retreated to around $86 as of Tuesday afternoon.
