Alysa Liu will not compete at this year’s World Figure Skating Championships despite coming off a historic Olympic campaign. The American star has reportedly withdrawn from the event in Prague, only weeks after her headline-making performance at the Winter Games.

Alysa Liu has reportedly withdrawn from figure skating worlds

According to reports, Alysa Liu, 20, has withdrawn from the upcoming world championships, set to begin March 24 at the O2 Arena. The Olympic gold medalist was originally expected to compete with fellow U.S. skaters Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito. With Liu stepping away, second alternate Sarah Everhardt will now join the American team.

First alternate Bradie Tennell reportedly declined the chance to compete. Officials have not confirmed the reason behind Liu’s decision. However, her name recently disappeared from the International Skating Union’s competitor list, signaling the change. The update comes less than a month after Liu won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, becoming the first American woman to claim the title since Sarah Hughes in 2002.

Alysa Liu added another big chapter to her comeback story with her Olympic triumph. The skater had stepped away from competitive skating after the 2022 Winter Olympics because of “PTSD.” Two years later, she returned to the ice and quickly found her rhythm again. Her comeback gained serious momentum in 2025. Liu captured the world title and became the first American woman to do so since Kimmie Meissner won in 2006. She then took things to another level at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Liu won gold in the women’s singles event. She also helped Team USA defend its Olympic team title alongside Amber Glenn.

Away from the rink, Alysa Liu recently opened up about an awkward moment with fans. She shared the experience on her Instagram story after landing at an airport. Liu said a group of people waited near the exit with cameras and items they wanted her to sign. The situation quickly became uncomfortable. Liu explained that one person even ran after her as she headed to her car.
