Cold temps, more snow could hamper winter storm cleanup efforts

Bitterly cold temperatures and lingering snowfall are hampering cleanup efforts and prolonging impacts to roads.

Don’t put away your shovels yets.

After Massachusetts got slammed with nearly two feet of snow, meteorologists are tracking another potential storm for the weekend.

“Still monitoring a possible late-weekend winter coastal storm, but there remains large uncertainty on its track, the National Weather Service Boston forecaster’s discussion on Jan. 28 said. It added that “all outcomes remain on the table, ranging from a dry pass offshore and no impact at all to a high-ceiling, slow-moving winter storm with several impacts.”

The timing would most likely be a chance of snow the night of Saturday, Jan. 31, and during the day on Sunday, Feb. 1, according to NWS.

“Our models are indicating that there is a fairly good chance a storm will be coming up the coast this coming weekend,” NWS meteorologist Torry Dooley said. “With that said, there is a lot of inconsistency with how close or how far the storm stays out to sea.”

Dooley recommends checking the weather forecast daily for any new updates.

However, until then, much of the state will remain dry, but cold, with high temperatures in the teens to low 20s, the weather service said.

Will the snow we already have on the ground stick around?

The National Weather Service said that the large piles of snow on the ground are expected to stick around – at least for this week.

“With well below freezing temperatures, the snow is not going anywhere. There will be compaction of the snow, so it will settle over the next couple of days, but it’s not like we’re going to see bare ground anytime soon,” Dooley said.
