The sports program for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games will be finalized in April 2027 during the 147th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic, the IOC announced on Saturday, October 31.
The Brisbane Games will become the first edition of the Olympics to implement the IOC’s new methodology for selecting sports and disciplines, introduced as part of its “Fit for the Future” reforms.
The revised approach aims to make the Olympic program more flexible, sustainable and responsive to changing sporting trends and operational requirements.
Under the new system, sports and disciplines will be assessed against objective criteria, including athlete representation, global popularity, financial costs and organizational complexity.
The IOC said the methodology had been developed in close cooperation with international sports federations to ensure a transparent and structured evaluation process.
As the next stage, the IOC Executive Board plans to make preliminary decisions in December 2026 on which disciplines will advance in the selection process.
The board will identify existing Olympic disciplines that can be automatically recommended for inclusion in Brisbane 2032, with the majority of current disciplines expected to qualify.
It will also determine which existing and candidate disciplines will undergo further comparative assessment and which proposed disciplines will be excluded from consideration.
The IOC said the new framework would be implemented in close cooperation with the Brisbane 2032 Organizing Committee, taking into account the advanced stage of preparations and existing operational plans.
The organization emphasized that the methodology would not only guide decisions for Brisbane but also serve as a model for determining sports programs at future Olympic Games.
The Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8, 2032.
