Massachusetts Republicans Slam Gov. Healey After She Mentions President 36 Times During Debate: ‘She openly admitted that the cost of living here is too much’

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s strategy in her first debate against Republican challenger Mike Minogue left some Bay State voters wondering whether Donald Trump—not Minogue—was actually facing her.

During the hour-long debate hosted by WBZ/CBS Boston, Healey reportedly mentioned Trump 36 times. Minogue never used the president’s name. Healey repeatedly connected her opponent to Trump while arguing that White House policies, including tariffs and the war with Iran, contributed to Massachusetts’ affordability problems.

Minogue attempted to keep the debate focused on Healey’s record, including taxes, energy costs and private-sector job growth. Healey countered by pointing toward tax cuts, capped copays and free community college programs enacted during her administration.

The repeated Trump references became one of the night’s biggest talking points. Inside a lively Massachusetts Reddit thread, several residents—even some who appeared unlikely to support Minogue and said Healey leaned too heavily on the president.

“Maura Healey’s response to every legit question that she couldn’t answer was ‘but Trump,’” one commenter complained.

Another person described the approach as a political turnoff despite previously supporting the governor: “Every single question she answers Trump. Major turn off for someone who voted for her before and has never voted for Trump.”

Others were equally unimpressed with Minogue. One commenter called his performance “one of the worst debate performances I’ve ever watched,” while another said the Republican was so unlikeable that he made them support Healey more enthusiastically.

That divide captured the mood surrounding the debate. Some Massachusetts residents clearly understood Healey’s argument that decisions made in Washington affect costs and public services at home. Others wanted direct answers about what she had accomplished during four years in office.

One commenter highlighted that frustration after Healey acknowledged Massachusetts remains expensive, writing, “She openly admitted that the cost of living here is too much and she’s had four years to change that.”

Healey remains favored in the race, but the reaction suggests invoking Trump may energize loyal Democrats while frustrating voters who want the governor’s reelection campaign focused more directly on Massachusetts.
