Boston College went 2-10 in 2025, its worst season in over a decade, to fall nearly four wins short of a 5.5-win total that already reflected rock-bottom expectations. The Eagles enter 2026 with a win total set at just 3.5, a number that signals how the market sees this program as firmly in rebuilding mode rather than on the verge of a quick turnaround.

The Eagles only won two games last year and I don’t see it getting much better this year. Currently, my power ratings project them to be favored in only one game (Maine). This might be Bill O’Brien’s final year already.

The Bill O’Brien experiment in Chestnut Hill doesn’t look like it will last much longer. While O’Brien did bolster the roster with transfer portal additions like running back Evan Dickens (Liberty) and Anthony Palano (Washington State), this is still one of the least talented teams in the Power 4.
The Eagles are expected to start Mason McKenzie at QB, and while he was a budding star at Saginaw Valley State, it’s a big ask for him to carry a P4 offense. And the addition of Ted Roof as defensive coordinator was about as uninspiring as any coordinator hire in the country.
Worth noting, Brian Kelly, a Massachusetts native, doesn’t need to fake an accent if he lands at Boston College in 2027.

Okay, Maine, boom, there’s one. Then where?
Boston College’s defense should once again be the strength of this team, but the biggest question mark comes on the offensive side of the ball. They bring in Division II dual threat quarterback Mason McKenzie, who threw for over 2,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,000 yards at Saginaw Valley State.
The production is impressive, but the concern is his efficiency as a passer. McKenzie is only a 58% career passer, and that is a major red flag heading into ACC play. That will be something to monitor all season long. Sure, the line will be solid, but if your leader is meh, then what?

My pick is Over, at four wins (Rutgers, Maine, Pittsburgh and Syracuse), but you could make an argument for either. My confidence in that pick is medium-low, but my main reason for making it is that I think the defense will be much better than it was last year. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them finish anywhere between two and six wins. Fewer than two or more than six would surprise me.

Strength of schedule (24th in FBS, per ESPN) is why I’m cautious of being overly confident in the team this year, and banking on a D2 quarterback is a bit of a gamble for the program.
But I still see at least four wins because of how much roster turnover there was with 25+ transfers, and the fact that BC lost so many one-possession games last year makes me think it was a matter of misfortunate events rather than truly sloppy play all year long. Take the Georgia Tech game, for example, which BC should have won.
