Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa could soon return to the Boston Red Sox.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy didn’t make any promises, but also didn’t rule out the possibility during his session with local media prior to Sunday’s game against the San Francisco Giants.
“Possibly, but we haven’t talked about that,” Tracy said when asked if one of the rehabbers could be activated to face the Miami Marlins on Monday. “We’re still in this check-in phase. After these guys get through a period (of playing), we check in, see how they feel and talk through it. Do they need to play some more? We’ll see.”
Boston hasn’t ironed out any of the specifics, but there is little doubt in the fact that it will be welcoming reinforcements over the coming days.
Anthony has played in four games for Double-A Portland, mixing in time as both the designated hitter and left fielder. Story and Kiner-Falefa have appeared in six and four games for Triple-A Worcester, respectively, with the former playing three in a row to round out last week’s series against the Syracuse Mets.
“I would imagine that they’re all three in a pretty similar spot as far as the length of time down,” Tracy said. “All of them were down for a while. All of them are going through the timing component and getting their bodies up to game speed, being able to post multiple days in a row.”
The Red Sox will use the minor league off day to reassess where each of the three is at, and although none will be on the team charter to South Florida on Monday, there will be a decision made on whether any will be activated to eventually join the team or if they’ll head back to Worcester to take on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
It’ll then bring up questions of who stays and who goes once they do rejoin the squad, which is the fun stuff.
