The New England Patriots had to dig deep to win Saturday’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles late, and they managed to do so on the back of rookie quarterback Behren Morton.
With the Patriots down by four points, Morton engineered a 73-yard drive with 3:39 left in the fourth quarter. The former Texas Tech standout methodically marched the offense down the field before sticking the dagger in the heart of the Eagles with a 37-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Nick DeGennaro.
Philly had a chance to tie the game up on the other end, but the Patriots closed the curtains on the birds with a sack by rookie edge rusher Quintayvious Hutchins.
However, Morton proved to be the star of the game for the Patriots as the acting quarterback and punter on special teams. And surprisingly, he wasn’t half bad moonlighting as a specialist, with three punts averaging 44.3 yards. As a quarterback, he went 13-for-17 passing for 129 yards and one touchdown.
