The Fallout of Rafael Devers’ Return to Fenway Park vs. Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox saw an old friend back in town for the first time in a year on Friday.

Boston welcomed the San Francisco Giants to Fenway Park on Friday night with a 6-4 win. That wasn’t the biggest story of the day, though. That was the return of slugger Rafael Devers. He was traded to the Giants last summer in a shocking mid-season swap. On Friday, he returned to Fenway Park for the first time since then and was welcomed by a chorus of boos from the Fenway faithful.

While Devers wasn’t welcomed back fondly to Fenway Park, he did crush a homer in his return to Boston.

Rafael Devers Heard The Boos

After the game, Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu spoke about the reception for Devers and how surprised he was, as shared on X by Marcos Grunfeld of ElEmergente.com.

“It was kind of a surprise for me because it was different. Different emotions. There [were] a lot of boos, but a lot of cheering for him. I didn’t expect him to get some boos because he is a really good person, a really good player. He did a lot for the team,” Abreu said, as shared by Grunfeld.

At the end of the day, the boos shouldn’t have been too shocking. Devers’ exit from the organization was messy. He did a lot over the years and will always be a champion, but the first few months of the 2025 season were full of drama because the highest-paid player on the team wouldn’t willingly switch positions. Now, of course, the club should’ve communicated with the face of the franchise better. But the drama of switching from third base to designated hitter made waves initially. Then, what really put the drama over the top was Devers not playing first base when Triston Casas got hurt.

If the Red Sox had Bregman at third base, Devers at first base and Masataka Yoshida as the team’s designated hitter, they would’ve been in a better place overall. But Devers publicly refused to pick up the glove. Then, what made things worse, was the fact that he did do so for the Giants.

That’s why the boos make sense. Down the line, he’ll be remembered fondly for winning a World Series title in Boston. But right now, all of that is still fresh. He refused to play first base for the Red Sox, but did do so for the Giants. Simple enough.
