Luke Murray reportedly played a role in Boston College broadcast firings.

A recently published story on the Boston College basketball program has put a negative spotlight on the head coach. A broadcaster claims that his firing was influenced by Luke Murray. He went public with the accusations this week.

The school is now in damage control, releasing a statement on the situation Monday. The Eagles are shielding Murray from blame. They insist it was not his decision.

Since the report dropped, a firestorm has been sparked on social media. Many have attacked the new Boston College basketball leader, as well as athletic administration.

Others, however, have begun digging through the announcer’s online history. Public doubts on Murray’s qualifications have surfaced. Did they impact his job status?

Boston College broadcaster says he was fired by Luke Murray.

Awful Announcing posted a piece which provided Kevin Collins’ account of what transpired. The basketball announcer has been at the school for 13 years. He worked alongside Josh Maurer for nine of those seasons. Both broadcasters were let go last week.

The move came as a shock to the duo as they’d previously been informed that there would be no changes following the staff shakeup. That confirmation came in March. They were fired four months later.

Collins insists it was at the direction of the basketball coach. Luke Murray, he suggests, wanted to cut ties with all remnants of the previous staff. That supposedly included the broadcast crew.

“The reasoning that I was given was that Coach Murray basically wants a whole new fresh coat of paint on the entire program and wants no remnants of the past around the program.

“We have nothing to do with any of that. But he wanted us removed. Didn’t feel comfortable being around a link to the past, if you will. My challenge was, well, how can he not feel comfortable around us? He hasn’t even given us the chance to meet us.”

    -Kevin Collins

Boston College denies that Murray influenced decision making. Administration chose not to renew Collins’ contract “in consultation with our multimedia rights partner,” the school said in a statement.

It is now Collins’ word against that of the Eagles. We do not truly know what took place. The optics aren’t great, though, and the drama’s provided an offseason distraction ahead of Murray’s debut campaign.

Murray was hired in March to replace Earl Grant. He has never been a head coach. Interestingly enough, Collins publicly questioned his qualifications around the time of his hiring.

Did it impact his job status?

I have 2 questions. 1.) are you comfortable with hiring a head coach with 0 head coaching experience? It’s one thing to do this at a low major and entirely different in the ACC. 2.) Kids are paid now. Recruiting is dead. Would his father bring in serious NIL for Boston College.?

    — Kevin Collins (@Kevin_R_Collins) March 17, 2026

Kevin Collins had questions about Murray’s lacking experience as a head coach. Though he’s been an assistant at stops like UCONN, Louisville, and Xavier, he’s never proven an ability to lead a program. That can present issue at a P4 school like Boston College.

It was a risk the Eagles were willing to take. Collins still has his doubts. Is it proof that the broadcaster disapproves of the hire? Does it show a bias against Murray?

I don’t believe so. It’s a legitimate concern. That doesn’t mean the coach won’t be successful.

With that being said, I doubt this particular post impacted his firing. Maybe Murray read it and took offense. But given that this was said in March, around the same time Collins was given confirmation that he’d remain on staff, it seems unlikely that this was some sort of tipping point.

It is still possible that Luke Murray wanted to start fresh at Boston College, as Collins claims, and that the broadcast crew was a part of that change.

Or, maybe Collins and Maurer were let go by administration in consultation with the MMR partner, as the school says. I do not know one way or the other.

I wouldn’t use Collins’ criticism as a “gotcha” moment in defending the basketball program, though.
