A career that never followed a sequential or progressive order didn’t surprise the college football analysts when it landed in Chestnut Hill as the next defensive coordinator at Boston College. For years, the lone intertwine bookended Roof’s career path with current BC head coach Bill O’Brien, and their natural pairing began long before either were head coaches. His addition to the Eagles therefore offers a rail spike for a team seeking to construct a turnaround for the upcoming season, a natural fit in the step towards gelling a defensive unit that provided BC with a staple hallmark across its greatest successes.
“We have guys making plays on the ball,” said Roof during his media availability on Saturday afternoon. “There are going to be mistakes, but it’s a growth experience. It’s a growth opportunity that we have to learn from and build on. Day one in shoulder pads is always good, so you can see who bites the game a little bit. When you’re in shorts, it’s all about assignments with no finish on the ball, no blow delivery. Getting to see guys play football is a little bit better and a little bit closer to football anywhere.”
Roof’s arrival in Chestnut HIll pairs him with a head coach and a relationship dating back more than 25 years. Each were part of George O’Leary’s Georgia Tech program during the Yellow Jackets’ rise into the top-10, and Roof later hired O’Brien as his offensive coordinator after being elevated to Duke’s head coach in the mid-2000s. They’d later matriculate apart when Roof led Auburn’s defense to a national championship while O’Brien provided coordinator duties to the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots. Their return to one another’s side at Penn State in 2012 ultimately cemented both’s reputation as unflappable presences under extreme circumstances, and their collective evolution is now a major upgrade to a BC program that surrendered 32-plus points and 430-plus yards per game in 2025.
“I’ve seen a lot of growth and improvement,” said Roof, “but that’s how it should be when they have all summer to work on their tools of the trade and their strength and conditioning. Having a great summer gives you a chance, and teams that don’t have a great summer usually don’t have a chance. Moving forward, it’s about what we do with the work and how we use it to build on it and grow with it. It’s all about moving forward because all we have is a chance. That’s all we want. That’s all we need.”
That point potentially helps BC understand the growth that might exist within its unit. In 2023, Roof’s defense ranked third nationally at Oklahoma while posting the seventh-most for-loss tackles per game, and both the Sooners and Georgia Tech finished among the most-improved third down defenses under his tutelage. The 2012 Penn State defense finished atop the Big Ten in sacks, and he’s consistently posted numbers that disproportionately produce valuable situational stops or turnovers.
Strategically, he understands how to scheme a defense against O’Brien’s offense, and their collective work provides a sounding board in a coaching room streamlining its approach. He knows how defenses will attack BC’s offense just as O’Brien understands how opposing offenses would scheme into the defense, and they can challenge one another to incrementally create advantages within intangible characteristics. Within that, getting to a next level – a few more stops, a few more turnovers, a few more explosive plays on both sides of the ball – is the byproduct produced by the vision that comes within the daily grind.
“I just talk about moving forward and building and growing,” said Roof. “It’s all about this year’s team. We’ll use whatever, as coaches, we have to use to try and get a motivation to stick, but it’s a new season, a new team. You want to learn from last year and use it as a motivator, but this year is all about moving forward. This is a new team, a new group of guys, and that’s what we’re worried about, not worrying about what’s in the rear-view mirror.”
