New York Knicks capture first NBA Championship since 1973

Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to the 2026 NBA Championship with a 4-1 series victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.

    • The New York Knicks have won their first NBA championship in 53 years.
    • A victory parade is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, through the Canyon of Heroes in Manhattan.
    • Here we reflect on other historic New York sports championship parades.

The New York Knicks have won the NBA Finals for the first time in 53 years, bringing a championship parade back to New York City for the first time since the Giants celebrated their Super Bowl XLVI victory in 2012.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the parade will take place on Thursday, June 18, with hundreds of thousands of fans – perhaps millions – expected to line the streets of Manhattan. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. near Battery Park, travel north through the Canyon of Heroes along Broadway, and conclude at City Hall Plaza.

At the ceremony, Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and the rest of the Knicks roster will receive the Keys to the City.

When was the last time the Knicks won the championship? Life in 1973

With one of New York’s most passionate fan bases finally seeing a championship, many believe the 2026 Knicks parade could become one of the largest and most memorable celebrations in city history, but it’s time to reflect on what came before.

    1. 1986 Mets World Series Parade

The Mets championship parade took place on October 28, 1986, after defeating the Boston Red Sox in a dramatic seven-game World Series.

An estimated 2.2 million fans packed Lower Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes, creating one of the largest sports celebrations in New York history.

The parade reflected the personality of the colorful Mets roster, producing a party atmosphere unlike any other championship celebration.

Players such as Gary Carter and Mookie Wilson interacted with fans throughout the route, while Dwight Gooden famously missed the parade and later revealed he watched it from an apartment while battling substance abuse.

Nearly 40 years later, the 1986 parade remains the gold standard for New York championship celebrations.

    2. 1994 Rangers Stanley Cup Parade

The Rangers ended a 54-year Stanley Cup drought in 1994, capturing their first championship since 1940.

An estimated 1.5 million fans filled the Canyon of Heroes as blue confetti rained down from office buildings along Broadway.

The emotional atmosphere reflected decades of frustration finally being lifted from one of New York’s most historic franchises.

Fans flooded the streets wearing Rangers jerseys and carrying signs celebrating captain Mark Messier and the championship team.

The parade became even more memorable because it occurred on the same day as O.J. Simpson’s infamous white Bronco chase in Los Angeles.

    3. 2008 Giants Super Bowl Parade

The Giants shocked the sports world by defeating the previously undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

The upset victory created an electric atmosphere as fans celebrated David Tyree’s iconic Helmet Catch and the Giants’ dominant defensive performance.

Crowds stretched far beyond the traditional parade route as chants of “18-1” echoed throughout Lower Manhattan.

The celebration featured Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, Tom Coughlin, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Governor Eliot Spitzer riding through the city on championship floats.

Many fans viewed the parade as one of the greatest celebrations in New York sports history because of the magnitude of the upset.

    4. 1996 Yankees World Series Parade

The Yankees celebrated their first World Series championship since 1978 with a ticker-tape parade on October 29, 1996.

More than 3 million fans packed the Canyon of Heroes, making it one of the largest championship parades ever held in New York City.

The title reignited baseball excitement in the Bronx and marked the beginning of a dynasty that would win four championships in five years.

Derek Jeter emerged as a future franchise icon as fans embraced the return of Yankees greatness.

Manager Joe Torre joined stars Bernie Williams, John Wetteland, and Jeter as the city celebrated the team’s comeback from a 2-0 World Series deficit against the Atlanta Braves.

    5. 2009 Yankees World Series Parade

The Yankees held their 27th World Series championship parade on November 6, 2009, following their victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Approximately 1 million fans lined the Canyon of Heroes to celebrate the franchise’s first championship in nine years.

The parade marked the first Yankees championship celebration of the new Yankee Stadium era.

Multiple generations of Yankees fans gathered together, with some arriving before 5 a.m. to secure a spot along the route.

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui received thunderous cheers while special guest Jay-Z joined players such as Alex Rodriguez and Francisco Cervelli during the celebration.
