After a setback last week halted Garrett Crochet’s live throwing sessions, the Red Sox moved their ace to the 60-day injured list on Friday afternoon.

By doing so, Boston was able to open up a spot on its 40-man roster for newly acquired reliever Joe La Sorsa. But it’s bad news for Crochet, who was initially placed on 15-day IL back on April 29, and said he didn’t think he’d be out much longer than the required 15 days.

He’ll now be out until at least June 25, as he was already about 40 days into his injury stint when they transferred him.

“[Crochet] has some lat tightness that kind of creeped up in the couple days of throwing after the live [BP] … so we’re going to back off on that for now,” interim manager Chad Tracy said back on May 31.

While the move isn’t too surprising given how long he’s already been out, it is confirmation that the Red Sox will be without their Cy Young runner-up from 2025 for at least two full months from the time he suffered his initial injury.

Though Boston’s rotation has generally stepped up in Crochet’s absence, Brayan Bello’s struggles have coincided with the ailment, and he’s now been demoted to Triple-A Worcester. So Boston will have two of its projected 2026 starters now out of the lineup completely.

The good news for Boston is that in Crochet’s absence, it’s seen multiple quality outings from Connelly Early, Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, and Payton Tolle. So once Crochet is ready, the Red Sox may finally have the dominant rotation they were projected to lean on ahead of the 2026 season.

As far as Bello is concerned, he’ll join the WooSox on Sunday, but manager Iggy Suarez isn’t sure if he’ll be in a starting role or coming out of the bullpen.

“I can only imagine what he’s going through mentally, that’s something that’s tough to go through,” Suarez said.

Boston will have La Sorsa available on Friday night for its series opener against the Yankees in the Bronx. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
