The Boston Red Sox and their slumbering offense need some good news. They may have gotten it Friday as young slugger Roman Anthony was no longer wearing a splint on his wrist. That could indicate that a return to the Red Sox lineup is forthcoming on the team’s current road trip.

The Red Sox are in Atlanta for three games over the weekend with the Braves and go to Kansas City for three more games. Anthony threw the ball with his teammates prior to Friday night’s game with the Braves and told media members that he was “in a good spot.”

His arm had been in a splint after he had taken a cortisone shot, with the hope that would accelerate his recovery. While Anthony had not hit his offensive stride prior to suffering his wrist injury earlier this month, the team has struggled badly without him. The Red Sox have had major problems at Fenway Park, scoring just 22 runs in their last 12 home games.

Anthony had looked like a future superstar when he was promoted from Triple-A Worcester last year, but his numbers have been below average this season. Anthony was hitting just .229 with one home run and five runs batted in when he was forced out of the lineup. He had drawn 20 bases on balls, but he has struck out 33 times.

The Red Sox are in last place in the American League East with an 18-25 record. While their pitching has been solid, the only hitters who have been producing include Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu.
