At the time of the injury the Red Sox sent Anthony back to Boston for further evaluation from a specialist. That determined he’s dealing with a sprained right wrist.

“There’s so much that goes on in the hand, and I’ve never dealt with a hand issue before,” said Anthony told reporters on Thursday via MLB.com. “So, I think just getting the news back, understanding that it’s nothing very serious, is the best news we could have gotten. The treatment is pretty simple, trying to get a lot of blood flow circulating around the wrist and the arm. Nothing too crazy. Just a little sprain. The ligament near the ring finger. Nothing that will take too long. So, I think that’s the best part.”

Anthony’s IL placement is retroactive to Tuesday’s game. That sets him up to return on May 15 at the earliest, and he says that date is his personal goal for his return.

“For me, where I stand right now, how it’s gone on and the way it’s felt over the last few days, when the IL stint is over, I plan to be in that game the next day,” said Anthony.

“It kind of heals on its own,” Anthony added. “So, it’s one of those things, when you feel like you’re able to go, you’re good to go. We have a great training staff. We have a great group in there, a great hand specialist. Just fully trusting in them and what they think and things that they’ve seen in the past with similar injuries. So, I’ll leave it up to them.”

This IL stint comes just as Anthony seemed to be getting into a rhythm for the first time this season – his first full year in the big league. In the 15 games before the injury he was hitting .264, after batting just .200 over the first 14 games of the season. For the year the 21-year-old is batting .229 with one home run and five RBIs in 30 games.

To fill Anthony’s roster spot the Red Sox called up infielder and catcher Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester. In 28 games with the WooSox Gasper was hitting .296 with six home runs and 27 runs driven in. This is his first call-up of the year, but he did appear in 13 games for the Red Sox in 2024 and then 45 games for the Minnesota Twins last season.
