LYNNFIELD, Mass. (WPRI) — A Massachusetts State Police trooper died following a wrong-way crash early Wednesday morning.
At the end of Trooper Kevin Trainor’s shift around 2 a.m., he began his commute home when state police said they received a 911 call about a wrong-way driver on Route 1.

Several troopers responded, but a Jeep Wrangler crashed head-on into Trainor’s cruiser.
Trainor was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
“At just 30 years old, and a trooper of only three years, Kevin epitomized what it means to be a public servant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” Col. Geoffrey Noble said. “Kevin represents the best of the best, the best of who we are.”
“Make no mistake: Trooper Trainor saved lives this morning,” Noble continued. “His courage, his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth and put his life on the line prevented an even greater tragedy. He will be remembered as a hero.”
Trainor began his career as a corrections officer in Essex County and distinguished himself as a member of the Massachusetts State Police 88th Recruit Training Troop, graduating in 2023.
During his three years on the squad, he served as a field training officer, or “trooper coach,” and mentored new troopers, earning himself a spot on the Troop A Community Action team.
“This act of service and courage is what our State Police are called to do every day. They show up ready to face danger so the rest of us can be safe. Today, Massachusetts is mourning one of those heroes,” Gov. Maura Healey said. “My thoughts and prayers are with the Trooper’s family, loved ones, and with fellow members of the State Police during this incredibly difficult time.”
Trainor leaves behind his mother, fiancée and four siblings.
The crash remains under investigation.
