The Boston Red Sox sent shockwaves through their organization when they fired manager Alex Cora amongst a slew of coaches. One former World Series champion had a descriptive way of describing that plan.

“It’s like s******g your pants and changing your shirt,” was the exact quote, via Rob Bradford of of Audacy Sports. Now, it has been revealed that Josh Beckett was the one who uttered that quip, via Baseball isn’t Boring, h/t Thomas Gamba-Ellis of the New York Post.

“It was me, it was me,” Beckett said. “It was so good, and I just felt like it fit.”

“I know A.C. [Alex Cora] really well and I thought he was the perfect guy to be there, and he kinda [stabilized] that ship. As we know in Boston, it’s 162 one-game seasons, and you can’t have a guy running that ship who can’t understand that,” he continued. “I know A.C. was perfect was that. Who they get next, they could be perfect for that as well. But I felt that saying kind of fit for this year.”

Beckett played for the Red Sox from 2006-2012, winning a World Series in 2007. He is well aware of what it takes to succeed in Boston. In his eyes Cora had all the tools necessary. Cora’s teams went 541-534 under him, making the playoffs three times and winning the World Series in 2018.

However, the Red Sox got out to a 10-17 start in 2026. To general manager Craig Breslow, that was enough to warrant a change. Beckett is rooting for whoever ends up replacing Cora, but his comments on Boston’s decision remain.
