Massachusetts high school sports highlights for April 18

A big softball matchup between undefeateds Georgetown and Gloucester lived up to its billing with a fierce pitching duel and a trio of home runs.

All that, plus the top high school finishers from the BAA Scholastic Mile, in Saturday’s Takeaways.

Here’s a fun one. Georgetown softball won 3-1 against Gloucester. All three runs came on solo home runs, starting with a solo shot in the second inning by eighth-grader Victoria Barbarick, and followed by back-to-back shots in the fifth by junior Ellie Barbarick and senior Maddie Grant.

BB&N senior first baseman Max Re got ahold of a pair of longballs in a 7-5 win over Pingree. The rest of the day’s round-trippers came from: Hamilton-Wenham’s Cormac Heney, Latin Academy’s Jack Shapiro, Milton Academy’s Ciara Zimon, Lynnfield’s Angelina O’Hara, and Lucas Hodne of St. Mark’s.

Will Crawford, St. John’s Prep — The senior FOGO was perfect, winning all 15 of his faceoffs in a 15-3 interstate boys’ lacrosse win over La Salle (R.I.).

Gia Gagnon, Lynnfield — The senior struck out 10 in five innings, helping her own cause with two hits, a run, and three RBIs in a 12-6 softball win over Lowell Catholic.

Cole Henebry, Nobles — The junior fanned 11 over seven shutout innings to blank Groton, 7-0.

Braedon Lounsbury, Winthrop — The sophomore fired an efficient one-hitter, needing just 81 pitches over seven innings to beat Lynn Tech, 4-1.

Jacob Matos, Taunton — The senior attack was the Tigers’ finisher, scoring all four goals in a narrow 4-3 win over New Bedford.

Jack McGuirk, Norwell — The senior attack did just that, scoring four times and dishing four assists to finish with 8 points in a 14-7 boys’ lacrosse win over Westford.

Max Re, BB&N — The senior was red-hot with the bat, going 3 for 3 with 2 home runs, 2 runs, and 4 RBIs in a 7-5 baseball win over Pingree.

Jack Shapiro, Latin Academy — One day after playing in the 100th game of his six-year high school career, the senior finished a double shy of the cycle in a 6-1 baseball win over Maynard.

Sadie Patel, Milton Academy — The junior shortstop was 3 for 3 with a triple, three stolen bases, and four runs scored in a 10-0 softball win over Rivers.

University of New Hampshire assistant coach and East Bridgewater graduate Casey DeAndrade has been hired as the new football coach and assistant athletic director at Thayer.

DeAndrade was chosen from a nationwide search, according to the school, after spending the last two years coaching defensive backs at UNH, where he was a four-year starter and a first-team All-American cornerback. He also spent three seasons as cornerbacks coach at Holy Cross.

After going undrafted out of UNH, DeAndrade signed with the Ravens but did not make the roster.

The Dodgers plan to call up former Millbury High star Ryan Ward to the majors, possibly by Sunday, according to multiple reports Saturday.

The 28-year-old outfielder played three years at Bryant before being selected in the eighth round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Dodgers.

Last year, he was named Pacific Coast League MVP after hitting 36 home runs, driving in 122 runs, and finishing with 315 total bases. So far this year he’s hitting .324 in 18 games with 4 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 13 runs.

He was ranked the No. 19 prospect in the Dodgers’ system by MLB Pipeline.

▪ Charleston junior Colby Duggan, a Phillips Andover graduate from Monson, announced he is transferring to Boston College. The 6-foot-7-inch, 225-pound forward averaged 9.3 points per game last year for the Cougars after posting 15.7 ppg as a sophomore for Campbell, where he played his first two collegiate seasons.

Tabor senior Sage Baptiste, a Wareham resident who played his first two high school seasons at Bishop Stang, announced his commitment to play men’s basketball at Northeastern. The 6-7 forward played for Team Sims on the Under Armour Rise circuit.

Newton pals Maggie Abely (Newton North) and Izzy Monaghan (Newton South) finished second and third, respectively, during the BAA Scholastic Mile on Saturday.

The race features two girls and two boys from each of the towns along the Boston Marathon route to compete in a one-mile race that ends at the finish line on Boylston Street. O’Bryant junior Sara Blanco won the girls’ race in 5 minutes, 17.81 seconds, finishing less than a second ahead of Abley (5:18.22), who was nearly two seconds ahead of Monaghan (5:19.94).

Natick senior John Bianchi won the boys’ race in 4:25.55 ahead of Brookline seniors Theodore Butty (4:26.68) and Harrison Flint (4:26.77).
