CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)- After a week that felt more like winter than spring, bringing snow on Tuesday and low temperatures in the 20s on Wednesday morning, western Massachusetts is on track for a significant warming trend.
Weak clipper system brings scattered snow showers and breezy conditions
The recent cold spell was caused by a large trough that settled over the eastern half of the United States. 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis explained the atmospheric shift, stating, “A large trough that set over the eastern half of the United States, mostly in part to a clipper system that brought us some of those snow showers for the day on Tuesday and delivered some of that colder air. That’s pushing away, behind it we got some high pressure building in.”
As the colder air moves out, high pressure is building in, signaling the start of a warmer period. Meteorologist Bouzakis added, “Going into the weekend, we’ll see temperatures climb back to the 60s.” He added that heading into next week, the 22News Storm Team is watching for a ridge to set up on the eastern half of the United States. There is a possibility of a Bermuda High pumping in even warmer weather. Temperatures could reach into the 70s for next week.
The 6 to 10 day temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center reinforces this forecast, showing a big warm-up ahead. Much of the Northeast is trending well above normal, with some models indicating temperatures could push close to 80 degrees in Springfield and Boston.
