Can France improve on their runners-up status in the 2022 World Cup to become World champions for the third time in their history come July in America? Speaking to TF1, France’s national team captain Kylian Mbappé (27) believes that Les Bleus‘ current crop of players has “more potential and more talent” than the squad that got beaten by Lionel Messi’s Argentina on penalties during the 2022 final.

On the back of a prestige friendly win against Brazil, Mbappé stopped short at suggesting that France will be stronger compared to four years ago. “I can’t say that, results will tell“, says the Real Madrid striker. “I knew France teams who had supreme talents, but they didn’t win anything.“

Fortunately for Les Bleus, Mbappé and his teammates will get into the thick of the World Cup from the get-go as their opening game will see them go toe-to-toe with Senegal, who were stripped of their AFCON victory. “If we turn up thinking we are going to win the World Cup, the Senegalese will get into us and we will come back down to earth very quickly“, Mbappé adds.
