UConn men’s basketball assistant coach Luke Murray will soon leave the Huskies’ sidelines.
Boston College announced Thursday that it has hired Murray as its next men’s basketball head coach.
Murray will remain with UConn for the remainder of the NCAA Tournament and then relocate to Chestnut Hill, Mass.

There, he’ll look to rebuild a program that has long been at the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference and hasn’t appeared in March Madness since 2009.
Since joining UConn in 2021, Murray has played a critical role in the program’s success, which includes back-to-back national championship victories.
Head coach Dan Hurley has credited Murray with modernizing the UConn offense by introducing European concepts, strategies and analytics.
With Murray’s input, the Huskies have consistently had one of the country’s most effective and efficient offensive units for the past five years.

Murray – the son of legendary comedic actor Bill Murray – has been coaching at the Division I level for more than 15 years.
After graduating from Fairfield University with a sociology degree in 2007, he became the director of operations for the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team for the 2007-2008 season.
In 2008-2009, he was an assistant coach at Post. He then traveled west, becoming a graduate assistant at Arizona in 2009-2010.
From there, Murray went to Wagner for the 2010-2011 season, where he first entered Hurley’s coaching tree.
In 2010-2011 and 2012-2013, Murray was an assistant coach at Townson.

Then, he rejoined Hurley in the summer of 2013 and worked as an assistant with Rhode Island through the 2014-2015 season.
As an assistant coach at Xavier from 2015-2018, Murray began drawing attention as a rising coaching star.

While he was on the Musketeers’ staff, the program appeared in an Elite Eight and earned a number one seed in separate seasons.
In 2018, Murray followed Xavier head coach Chris Mack to Louisville, where he played an even greater role in daily operations and recruiting.
In the summer of 2021, Hurley and Murray united for a third time, as Murray joined the UConn staff. As Huskies’ fans like to say, the rest has been history.

In a release from Boston College Thursday evening, Murray said he is honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Eagles’ going forward.
“BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition,” Murray said. “Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough and highly competitive brand of basketball.”
Murray said he is excited to help rebuild Boston College’s proud program.

He recognized that Murray has helped build national championship-winning rosters that played with grit and succeeded using cutting edge strategies.
