Another Tennessee reunion is slated for the Patriots in 2026 when veteran safety Kevin Byard reunites with his former coach, Mike Vrabel, in New England.

Byard worked under Vrabel for multiple seasons with the Titans, and he embodies the same brand of toughness as most of Vrabel’s current and past players. Not only will he bring elite ball-hawking skills to New England, but he will also add another key veteran voice on a defense that ranked among the best last season.

Vrabel has often spoken highly of Byard, even when the two weren’t working together directly. Now, he’ll have one of his favorite defensive weapons back for the 2026 season.

What does the deal look like?

The Patriots and Byard agreed on a one-year, $9 million deal in free agency.

    Grade: B+

Byard is no young grasshopper at 32 years old, but he’s still capable of being a dominant force on the football field, as he showed with the Chicago Bears last season. The veteran defender led the entire NFL in interceptions and earned the third First-Team All-Pro selection in his career last season. Adding another elite playmaker to the backend of the defense is a solid move for the Patriots.

Despite his age, Byard has played in every game over the last two seasons, racking up 93 tackles, eight pass deflections and seven interceptions with the Bears in 2025. He’s also a hard-nosed vocal leader on the football field, which should serve the team well.

With that said, the Patriots still need to get younger at the safety position. Granted, they found a true diamond in the fourth round of last year’s NFL draft with Craig Woodson. Perhaps they’ll be looking to do the same this time around with Byard serving as the one-year bridge option.
