Boston police will restrict access to and increase police presence around college campuses and other popular areas on Super Bowl Sunday, officials said.

Commissioner Michael A. Cox sent a letter to colleges and universities outlining steps department will take to ensure a safe celebration when the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX at 6:30 p.m. in Santa Clara, Calif.

Parking and vehicle access will be restricted around Boston University and Northeastern University as well as in areas with many restaurants and bars, including Brighton, Kenmore square, Faneuil Hall and North Station the letter said.

Starting around 8 p.m. Sunday, pedestrian access will also be limited Kenmore Square, Boylston and Hemenway streets, Cox said.

Cox urged students to celebrate responsibly, be aware of their surroundings, and prepare for dangerously cold weather.

Artic air is predicted to settle over Boston area Sunday, with highs only reaching the teens and wind chills reaching the negative 20s and 30s, according to the Globe’s weather team.

Extra patrols will monitor drinking establishments and neighborhoods known to often have house parties, police said.

“Should you behave in a way that warrants the intervention of Boston or campus police, your name will be shared with your respective Dean of Students for appropriate discipline,” Cox said.
