The Boston Red Sox have reportedly been trying to retain Alex Bregman all offseason, but he still remains unsigned.

Spring training is getting closer, and Bregman’s free agency has once again taken longer than expected. The Red Sox have publicly noted how much they admire Bregman and have reportedly made an “aggressive” offer to him.

It is now January, and free agents are running out of time to sign. Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws and Nick Selbe predicted Bregman’s long free agency would end with him re-signing with the Red Sox.

“Bregman opted out of his contract just one year into his three-year, $120 million deal in Boston,” wrote Sports Illustrated on Wednesday. “A quad injury cost him about a month-and-a-half in the middle of the year, but he was otherwise productive at the plate after a relatively down 2024 campaign. Bregman’s approach is sound, with minimal swing-and-miss and a good command of the strike zone, and his defense remains at least solid at the hot corner, so it seems likely he’ll get four- or five-year offers from teams this time around. Bregman assumed a leadership role last year with the Red Sox, who appear motivated to sign a star infielder.”

Bregman’s leadership is perhaps why he is so high on the Red Sox’s priority list. Young players on the team praised him for his leadership even while he was injured. On the field, he was named an All-Star for the third time in his career.

Before his injury, Bregman was on pace to have a phenomenal season. Before his injury, he was hitting .299 with a .938 OPS. He still finished with a .273/360/.462 slash line and 18 home runs.

He had the ninth-best OPS in baseball before his injury. He hit .250 with a .724 OPS after his injury. After a full offseason to heal, he may be ready to dominate again like he did prior to his injury.
