Virginia notched the 1,000th win in women’s basketball program history in dominant fashion, leading by 19 at the break on the way to an 81-55 victory at Boston College on Sunday.

“We wanted to make sure we started ACC right. I think this is a pretty dominant win to start,” said ‘Hoos coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, whose team (7-3, 1-0 ACC) has had an uneven start to what has been hoped to be a breakthrough season in her fourth year leading the program.

From the low of the home defeat at the hands of a UMBC team that is sitting at 4-5 on the season at the moment, Sunday was a win in an ACC road opener.

Boston College (4-8, 0-1 ACC) was never in this one.

The ‘Hoos closed the first quarter on a 10-3 run to open up a 13-point lead, then held the Eagles to 1-of-16 shooting in the second quarter to lead 40-21 at the break.

Six ‘Hoos scored in double figures:

    • Kymora Johnson (13 points, nine assists)
    • Paris Clark (13 points, six rebounds, five assists)
    • Sa’Myah Smith and Gabby White (12 points)
    • Tabitha Amanze (11 points, 10 rebounds)
    • Romi Levy (11 points)

“I love the resilience we showed, the poise we showed,” Agugua-Hamilton said. “We bounced back from that Vandy game, which was a game where we weren’t very connected. We got better in practice these last couple days, and we were able to apply some of that here, just staying on the same page, understanding we have to execute the game plan, but we have to be us. I just think there was a lot of growth in this game.”

Up next: Virginia returns home to host Howard (7-4) on Wednesday. Tipoff from John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).
