CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Defensive end Edwin Kolenge was named one of three recipients of the 79th annual Swede Nelson Award, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced Monday afternoon. The award recognizes Division I, II, and III college football players at New England institutions that display outstanding sportsmanship, academic and athletic achievement.

Kolenge, originally from Montreal, Quebec, studies human-centered engineering at Boston College. As part of a collaborative service engineering project, Kolenge applied his passion for thermodynamics to help people waiting for the bus during the winter by designing thin heating slats that minimally disrupted sidewalk traffic. In his senior capstone course, Kolenge worked with a team of students on an industry-sponsored project to develop an automated dispensing system for instant ice cream that would save energy by removing the requirements to keep ice cream cold prior to eating.

“Edwin is part of one of the first cohorts of B.S. in Human-Centered Engineering majors at Boston College,” the Boston College engineering department said in a statement. “He has dedicated himself to this program and collaborated with his fellow students and faculty to help define what excellence means for BC engineering. Edwin has not only succeeded in the classroom but has also emerged as a leader and problem solver within his project teams.”

Kolenge has played in all 11 of the Eagles’ games this season, making nine starts at defensive end. Kolenge has 27 total tackles, five quarterback hits, and one sack.

Founded in 1932, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston promotes the game of football at all levels and nurtures the ideals of citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, and athletic and academic achievement.

The Bob Whelan College Night hosted by the Club will take place on Monday, December 15 at the Burlington Marriott Hotel.
