The NBA playoffs are happening now, but a different kind of basketball game had a Redlands crowd cheering Friday, April 25.

A charity contest between Redlands school employees and the Harlem Wizards entertained the audience while raising money for a nonprofit group that supports Redlands schools.

The Redlands Educational Partnership sent its team, the REP Rebounders, onto the Redlands East Valley High School court to take on the Wizards.

The Rebounders’ lineup included teachers, staff members and administrators — including Redlands Unified School District Superintendent Juan Cabral.

The game featured slam dunks, trick shots and comedy bits — courtesy of the Wizards — as more than 700 people watched, a district news release states.

“I love to see the community, and especially our students, having so much fun,” Cabral said in the release. “That’s what it’s all about – a night of fun. There’s family, friends, food and the funds are going straight back to our classrooms.”

The Wizards earned the “W,” but game proceeds will go to partnership programs that offer grants and classroom resources to Redlands schools.
