Should Trump get the Nobel Peace Prize?

President Donald Trump continues to garner low approval ratings in Massachusetts, shows a new poll from the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

35% of Massachusetts residents approve of his handling of his job as president, while 61% disapprove. His net approval rating (-26) is up slightly from May (-31). Despite the low support overall, nearly all Republicans in the state (95%) approve.

Of voters who disapprove of Trump, the most important reasons are undermining democracy/Constitution (28%), poor conduct or corruption (22%) and handling of immigration (10%).

Of those who approve, the most important reasons are handling of immigration (31%), leadership/decisiveness (12%) and honesty/transparency (12%).

A majority of Bay Staters also don’t approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, foreign affairs or his actions toward the federal reserve.

About two-thirds of Massachusetts residents also don’t approve of Health and Humans Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The poll, released Sept. 30, surveyed 762 Massachusetts residents online from Sept. 17 – 23. The margin of error is +/- 3.6%.

Massachusetts residents worried about political violence

Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 70% of Massachusetts residents are worried that they or a family member will be victimized by politically motivated violence by a fellow American.

Massachusetts residents are less likely to be worried about this than those in Rhode Island, Connecticut or New Hampshire, the poll found.

69% of Bay Staters are also worried about being victimized by a mass shooting.

Massachusetts residents are less worried about being the victim of a terrorist attack by foreign actors (45%) or a natural disaster (43%).

The poll found that libertarians are most worried about politically motivated violence, while progressives, socialists and moderates are most concerned about a mass shooting. Socialists and progressives are more likely to be concerned about a natural disaster while moderates and conservatives are more likely to be concerned about a terrorist attack.

The poll also found that a majority (54%) of Massachusetts residents would feel less safe if the National Guard was deployed to cities in Massachusetts, as it has been to cities like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. A majority thought that those deployments were not justified, the least of which being Los Angeles.
