🏐 Barrington volleyball blanks West Warwick

WEST WARWICK – After losing more matches in a six-day stretch than it lost all of last season – also matching its total from 2023 – the Barrington girls volleyball team was looking for a way to prove it still belongs in the conversation as a favorite in Division II.

    Wednesday did just that.

Most programs would be reeling after losing three straight, but the Eagles aren’t your typical program. They came into West Warwick with a different type of energy and after grinding out a tough first set, took control to grab a 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 sweep of the Wizards, ending the losing streak before it got out of hand.

“This is our first sweep of the season, so it’s good,” Barrington’s Melissa Freshman said. “As a team we’ve been struggling a little bit to get in a groove of things.”

The defending D-II champs opened the season with three impressive victories, including a four-set win over Division I East Providence. The momentum from those wins was quickly stopped when Barrington was swept by Bishop Feehan (Mass.) last Wednesday, then followed with a five-set loss to East Bay rival Mt. Hope two days later and a four-set road loss to Westerly Monday.

“What we mainly try to do is not get down on ourselves and keep pushing,” Freshman said. “And don’t look at our losses like a bad thing.”

“It’s definitely a big switch-up from last year,” said senior captain Emma McCrann, who had 10 kills and three aces in the win. “We’re a great team. We’re a young team, for sure, which is a little tough to start out, but we have a lot of life in us.”

While it was too early to call Wednesday’s match a must-win, it was certainly one the Eagles wanted to make sure they had.

Nerves were high early in the first set, but Barrington found a rhythm to take a lead and while West Warwick battled tough, the Eagles made sure to finish clean.

In the second set, the Eagles found their form. The serve-receive was on point, the passing – led by senior libero Lily Floriani – allowed the offense to get in system and the serving was simply spectacular in the 25-15 win.

“Our coach always tells us our serving percentage, out hitting percentage,” McCrann said. “He’s really big about the small details because that’s what makes a big difference.”

The third set was close at the end, but Barrington was never threatened. The Eagles continued to play championship-caliber defense and Freshman ran the offense like a pro. Up big late, Barrington emptied the bench but was able to close things out before things got really scary, earning a sweep that sets it up nicely for Thursday’s rematch with Cumberland.

“We really just need to keep pushing ourselves to our best,” Freshman said. “We need to tell ourselves no matter who we’re playing, no matter if we win or lose, we need to be playing our best and be putting in our best efforts.”

“We’ve had a little bit of confidence issues at the start of the season, up and down in sets, but this is definitely a big step for us,” McCrann said. “We’re definitely looking forward to Cumberland.”

    🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Division I

North Kingstown 3, Cranston East 0

North Kingstown girls volleyball hasn’t lost a match in more than two years and that streak didn’t stop Wednesday night.

The Skippers blitzed Cranston East, 25-11, 25-13, 25-14, in Cranston. North Kingstown started on an 8-1 run in the opening set as Kayleigh Garrepy, the Skippers’ returning All-State middle hitter, took over from the beginning.

North Kingstown is a younger group this season with just three seniors and a handful of juniors. The Skippers are still finding their way this fall and that’s a scary thought for the rest of the state.

    Chariho 3, East Greenwich 0

    🏐GIRLS VOLLEYBALL — Division II

    Mt. Hope 3, Cumberland 2

Things looked good for Cumberland early in this contest as the Clippers took the first two sets (11-25, 16-25), but the Huskies recovered to take the last three (25-22, 25-22, 16-14). Margaret Thorp (8 kills, 7 digs), Sarah Wilcox (8 kills, 8 digs) and Hayden Sylvia (15 assists, 7 digs) led the way for Mt. Hope.

Darryl Ashilaka had 22 kills and 14 digs for Cumberland. The Clippers also got 34 digs from Mia Hamel and 44 assists from Lyla Parmentier.

    Exeter-West Greenwich 3, Pilgrim 0

The Scarlet Knights made things uncomfortable for the Patriots on their home court with a straight-set shutout (25-12, 25-21, 25-18). Trinity Pearson led the charge for Exeter-West Greenwich with 10 assists and 2 digs, while teammate Sadie O’Connor managed 7 aces. Shannon Weaver had 6 aces and 3 kills for Pilgrim.
