The Red Sox really could have used a victory on Wednesday.

Boston was not only on the precipice of completing a series sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, but could have brought itself back to .500 on the season before beginning a six-game stretch with the lowly Washington Nationals and Colorado Rockies.

Can you guess what happened next?

Greg Weissert gave up a go-ahead grand slam, Romy Gonzalez ran into an out on the bases (and likely would have scored the game-tying run if he hadn’t), Trevor Story and Abraham Toro committed errors that allowed the visitors to extend their lead late aaaaaaaaaaand they lost the capper to an unofficial doubleheader.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora wasn’t too happy with the result, and dropped a truth bomb on his team in his postgame media availability.

“If you look back at the season, there’s been a lot of those that have slipped through our hands and honestly, we’re in the position where we are because of that,” Cora said, per Marcos Grunfeld.

Cora has every right to be frustrated with his team’s performance. Gonzalez’s miscue was completely avoidable, and was the exact kind of momentum killer that has plagued the team over the course of the last three seasons.

Boston doesn’t look like a serious contender to buy at the deadline, but team leaders have kept pushing the narrative that they will be. We will see about that, because there’s plenty of time for their minds to change.
