There are a handful of players the Red Sox cannot afford to be without, and Friday afternoon the club may have lost the most indispensable of all.
Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman left Friday’s game with an apparent injury during the bottom of the fifth inning. The injury occurred after Bregman hit a hard line drive to left field for a base hit, and after rounding first he hesitated a moment before opting not to try and stretch the single into a double, but in the process it appeared that he tweaked something and immediately signaled for the trainer.

Bregman walked straight off the field on his own power and into the Red Sox clubhouse. The Red Sox announced shortly afterwards that Bregman is dealing with right quad tightness.
Abraham Toro came in to pinch run for Bregman, and Nick Sogard moved from first to third base to fill his spot defensively the following inning.
Bregman was one of Boston’s biggest offseason additions and has been the club’s top all-around position player through the first two months of the season. Bregman is currently batting .299 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI and a .938 OPS in 51 games and leads the Red Sox in Wins Above Replacement with 3.0.
