Mets 5, Red Sox 1: No Sweep This Time

The Red Sox lost and I’m tired of writing the game recaps of them losing. They don’t really like winning on Wednesdays! They also hate being good when it isn’t beautiful weather outside. Crochet was solid, but the bullpen, after being so great the last two games, went back to being lackluster. You can’t blame the whole loss on the bullpen though, as the offense did nothing to help the pitchers either. Scoring only one run will usually not win you the game, especially against the Mets.

    Two Studs:

Garrett Crochet: Not his greatest outing, but only giving up 1 run is still good. His final stat line was 5.1 IP, 5 hits, 1 run (and earned), 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts. Soto’s performance against him was quite comical.

Jarren Duran: Gave the Sox the only run of the game with a sac fly. Had the wind not had money on the Mets, it might’ve been a grand slam from the way he hit it.

    Three Duds:

The Bullpen: Liam Hendricks, who was on the most rest out of everyone out of the bullpen, had a clean top of the sixth, but then loaded the bases with no outs, which Brennan Bernardino couldn’t get out of without giving up a two-run RBI single and a sac fly. Definitive Innings Eater Newcomb then gave up a solo homer to Lindor, which was ironic given that Walker Buehler (my king) had defended the bullpen in response to a fan online discussing Lindor’s at-bat behavior before Buehler’s ejection last night.

I wouldn’t want me out there either. Sad thing is the BULLPEN is full of fucking animals. Tough choice. https://t.co/XuWysoT0aW

The Offense: The offense was not good against Mets pitching today. Only one run and six hits is nothing to celebrate. Bregman gave himself a Golden Sombrero, going 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. Abreu and Story went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. Rafaela went 0-2 with 2 strikeouts. A lot of yuckiness. The cold renders the Sox offense useless like it’s an elemental weapon in a video game.

Alex Cora: On the one hand, you wanna protect Crochet. On the other…was tonight really the night to do that? On the one hand, you assume everyone—meaning the very exhausted bullpen—has the off-day tomorrow because of the incoming Nor’easter. On the other hand, is that a guarantee? Cora’s not why we lost this game, but in hindsight, leaving Crochet in for another inning might’ve been the better move.

Play of the Game: Crochet Makes Soto Look Stupid

Who would win, the $765 million dollar man, or a pig? The answer tonight was the pig. Soto took all his pitches against Crochet looking.
