CAMBRIDGE — From the first practice this spring the Dover-Sherborn girls tennis team was on a mission.
On Sunday the Raiders accomplished it.
Dover-Sherborn wrapped up an undefeated season with an MIAA Division 3 state title, defeating Martha’s Vineyard, 5-0 at MIT.
“At the beginning of the year, our team decided this was what they wanted and they succeeded,” said D-S coach Ashley Tucillo, who is in her second season. “I’m so happy for them and proud.”
S-S wrapped up the season at 20-0. The Raiders were seeded first. Martha’s Vineyard finished the year at 18-2, entering the tournament as the third seed.
This is the Raiders’ first state championship since 2009. It was the program’s third state title. The first was in 1993.
Martha’s Vineyard had previously won three state titles, the most recent in 2017.
Junior Leah Hills clinched the championship with a 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles against Alaina Dubin.
“Leah has been very good all year,” Tucillo said. “She’s very consistent.”
Said Hills, “I’m so happy about this. The second and third singles did their job and that helped.”
At second singles, Mia Griebel won against Charlotte Marsha’s, 6-4, 6-1.
At third singles Sarah Ewing defeated Ellie Pennington, 6-0. 6-1.
In doubles play, the Raiders’ won a pair of three-set matches.
At first Grace Makkas and Carolina Mahoney won 6-2. 7-6, 6-4 against Zoe Treitman and Leah Thomson.
The second doubles team of Laura Green and Emma Motley prevailed against Ella Moran and Clementine Zander, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
