The Boston Red Sox desperately needed to avoid suffering the same fate on back-to-back days.

It’s just not in the cards right now…

Boston made three errors on Wednesday, eventually dropping a second consecutive extra-innings matchup, 6-5, to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

Nick Sogard misplayed a slow roller on the right side of the mound when he should have just covered the bag. Kristian Campbell made a horrendous throw to home, giving away a run and allowing runners to advance. Justin Slaten fell behind against every single batter he faced before giving up a game-ending sacrifice fly.

And that was all in the extra frame!

“We didn’t play well today,” Cora said following the game, as seen on NESN. “The score was the score, but we walked the leadoff guy, we didn’t cover first, we dropped a fly ball in left, we got thrown out at third, we made a bad play at the end. I think the score will say it was a good baseball game, but we didn’t play well today.”

It’s obvious to many where the team should look to turn things around, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a hurry to make changes to the roster.

“We have to be better, from top to bottom, from the manager to the players,” Cora said. “We have to be better. It’s close in games and all that, but we have to find ways to win games. That’s it. It’s not early anymore, so we know who we are and we know what we have on the roster. That isn’t going to change.”

The Red Sox and Brewers produced plenty more news and notes on Wednesday:

    — Alex Bregman was placed on the injured list between Game 1 and Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader, which has led to a season-worst five-game losing streak.

    — Boston has lost 15 one-run games this season, by far the most in baseball.

    — Hunter Dobbins made the first relief appearance of his career, but it didn’t go very well. Milwaukee immediately tagged him for two runs on two hits and one walk during his first inning of work.

    — Wilyer Abreu walloped another home run to tie the game in the seventh inning on Wednesday, putting him on pace to hit a ridiculous 38 home runs while slashing .255/.336/.505.

    — The Red Sox will stay on the road for their next series against the Atlanta Braves, kicking things off on Friday at Truist Park. NESN will have full coverage starting one hour prior to first pitch — which is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET.
