CAMBRIDGE — The Bedford High boys tennis team had been waiting all year for Sunday.

In their third state final appearance in four years, the Buccaneers captured the title by defeating the team it lost to in last year’s final, Weston, at MIT for the MIAA Division 3 state championship.

For Bedford (15-4) it was the first state title since 2015 and its third ever. The Buccaneers won the Division 2 championship in 2002.

Weston, last year’s champion, finished at 9-8.

“This is just a great athletic group,” said Bedford coach John Geilfuss, who has been at the helm for all three titles. “They play a lot of different sports, soccer, hockey. You don’t see that much.”

During Dual County League play Bedford defeated Weston, 3-2.

“It was kind of tight, like this one, with a lot of close matches,” Geilfuss said.

The one match that had a different result on Sunday was at third singles, where the Buccaneers’ Logan Cox prevailed against Jacob Wu, 6-2, 6-1.

“I was more comfortable this time,” Cox said. “It was a tough three-set match the last time.”

Bedford clinched the championship at second doubles, where Ryan Leo and Rylan Nichols defeated Sammy Regelmen and Ben Rosenfeld, 7-6 (7-1) 6-1.

At first doubles, Bedford’s Leo Natalizio and Charles DeMeo won, 6-4, 6-0.

With the match already decided Bedford’s Spencer Goss won a third-set tiebreaker against Winston Starrett, 10-5 after split the first two sets 6-4, 4-6.

“It was a little nerve wracking but most of the pressure was off,” Goss said. “After losing in the finals last year it’s great to win it.”

Weston’s Peter Chen won against Dillon Denny Brown 6-2, 6-2.
