Joe Burrow is going to miss the next three months as a result of the toe injury he suffered on Sunday and the Bengals are turning to Jake Browning as their starting quarterback. Browning rallied the team to a win over the Jaguars after Burrow went down and head coach Zac Taylor said at a Monday press conference that “the guys will ride behind” the backup. Taylor noted that Browning started seven games for the team in 2023 and said that the quarterback has “earned the right to be in the spotlight.” Taylor also said that the team’s goals aren’t…
Maybe the national team turned a corner in last week’s 2-0 win over Japan.Maybe the change to a 3-4-2-1 formation unlocked the lively and innovative play that had been missing in the team’s first year under coach Mauricio Pochettino. Maybe Pochettino and his players have finally found the chemistry and coordination that was so obviously missing. And maybe, just maybe, the U.S. really can make a deep run in next summer’s World Cup, the first to be played in the U.S. in 32 years.Maybe.Or maybe not.One game can’t totally erase the dysfunctional and dispassionate performances that have marked much of the…
BOSTON — The state’s highest court will weigh whether local boards have the authority to rein in cell towers. At issue is a 115-foot Verizon tower off South Street in Pittsfield. Since it went live in 2020, neighbors have said they’ve suffered headaches, nausea, sleep problems and other negative health impacts attributed to the radio frequency emissions. The Pittsfield Board of Health issued an emergency cease-and-desist order against Verizon after investigating residents’ complaints. The order called the tower a “public nuisance” that was a “cause of sickness,” the first order of its kind in the country, according to ProPublica. But the board…
Connelly Early is expected to get his second start with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday at Fenway Park against the Athletics. Early was strong in his major league debut last week, striking out 11 and allowing and five hits with a walk over five scoreless innings in a win over the A’s. Here in Maine, we remember the lefty as an ace in the Portland Sea Dogs’ rotation. It’s not like we have to search our memory banks. Early was a Sea Dog until late July, when he was promoted to Triple-A Worcester. Payton Tolle’s time in Portland was…

As one might imagine, a high school sports editor is pretty busy during the school year. It’s part of the job. That’s fine, because like students and teachers, the summer is (a little) less busy. But from Labor Day to Memorial Day, it’s more than a full-time job. This isn’t me complaining – I knew what the job was when I signed up for it. I got part of the day off Saturday (I still had to write this column). How did I spend it? Watching athletes I was privileged to cover in high school play local college football –…
With Eurobasket behind us, we are finally updating our list of the greatest international players ever. The biggest change from last year is Canadian guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaking into the Top 10 after a dominant season in which he won a treble of MVPs and his first NBA title with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Among the new faces in the ranking are 2025 All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and Alperen Sengun, who made the cut despite their limited body of work.Just like with our HoopsHype79 list, we compiled votes from our staff, removed the highest and lowest rank for each player, and awarded…
Observers of Kalshi-versus-state lawsuits had, until last week, seen three cases that followed a familiar pattern — even if judges’ rulings weren’t always the same.A state would issue a cease-and-desist order against Kalshi, ordering it to shut down its sports event contracts, and when it tried to enforce the order, the prediction market would sue in federal court.AdvertisementBut the lawsuit filed Friday by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell against Kalshi is a new phase in the battle between states and prediction markets over whether sports event contracts are a legal and federally regulated financial product, or an illegal form…
