The Hamburg Area High School Student Council recently hosted its Second Annual Charity Basketball Game, pitting high school staff against middle school staff in a friendly yet competitive matchup.

The event, held at the high school in front of a crowd of 600 in attendance, aimed to raise funds for Blessed Beginnings, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping individuals and families rebuild their lives after experiencing abuse.

The Hamburg Area Middle School team dominated the game, securing a 57-36 victory over the high school staff.

The middle school team showcased impressive skills, landing three-pointers and executing seamless layup passes. Though the high school team struggled with a 10-point deficit, they fought back to close the gap, making for an exciting, fast-paced game filled with incredible shots and strong teamwork.

Months of Hard Work for a Worthy Cause

The Student Council’s charity basketball game committee dedicated months of planning to ensure the event’s success. Their efforts extended beyond the court, coordinating a community-wide fundraising initiative to support Blessed Beginnings.

Local businesses contributed prizes for a raffle, while Student Council members organized a food drive, allowing students to gain free entry by donating canned goods or receiving $1 off the $5 admission fee.  A total of 460 canned goods were donated to the Northern Berks Food Pantry, a community organization based in Hamburg, which provides food assistance to individuals and families in need.

    More Than Just Basketball

The evening featured halftime and between-quarter activities, including knockout, musical chairs, head-shoulder-knees-cone game, and King of the Court, keeping the energy high and the crowd engaged. Additionally, Hamburg Area High School clubs set up booths in the alternative gymnasium, selling various items and generously donating a portion of their proceeds to Blessed Beginnings.

Thanks to these combined efforts, the event successfully raised $2,500 for the nonprofit, making a meaningful impact on those in need.
