The Red Sox have brought in some additional bullpen reinforcements.
A source confirmed to the Herald that the Red Sox have acquired right-handed reliever Jorge Alcala in a trade with the Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox are sending minor league third baseman Andy Lugo to Minnesota in exchange, and to clear space on the 40-man roster the team is designating right-hander Brian Van Belle for assignment.

Alcala has appeared in 22 games for the Twins this season, posting an 8.88 ERA with 28 strikeouts over 24.1 innings. While the righty has struggled this season, he was much more effective in 2024, recording a 3.24 ERA in 58.1 innings over 54 appearances.
Overall Alcala has appeared in 166 games over seven MLB seasons, all with the Twins, and during that stretch he’s posted a 4.32 ERA for his big league career.
Lugo most recently played for Boston’s High-A affiliate, where he had spent the entire season so far. The 21-year-old is batting .265 with four home runs, 20 RBI and a .740 OPS, and according to MLB Pipeline he was not among the organization’s Top 30 prospects.
